A2 milk is a misnomer! Call it indigenous cow (desi cow/nattumadu) milk! The increased awareness about A2 enriched milk in recent times is unable to efficiently attract farmers into indigenous cattle farming due to the challenges associated, such as, higher feed cost, inappropriate milk prices and adulteration. The inability to differentiate indigenous cow milk & milk products from that of its hybrid counterpart is neither able to authenticate the genuineness of indigenous cow milk nor control the adulteration issues associated. Hence, the farmers are unable to make a case for getting prices for A2 milk, which costs almost double than the regular cow milk. A SNP genotyping based test is available to detect the presence of A1 and A2 proteins in the milk sample, but it can neither authenticate the milk that is being sold in the market nor regulate the adulteration of the milk, as both these proteins are present in hybrid and indigenous breeds. The milk of hybrid and indigenous breeds differs with the fraction of A2 protein being present. Thereby, arising the need for quantification of A2 protein for the authentication purpose.
But, Elango Genetics has successfully overcome this issue with a molecular approach for bifurcation of indigenous and hybrid cow milk using a DNA marker other than CSN2 gene, which is specific for indigenous breeds alone.
